foam surfboard

A foam surfboard is a board made out of EPS (expandable polystyrene). Usually, the starting size is 6 feet in length x 20.5 inches wide. These dimensions are the most standard when it comes to creating anything else you want with your board, be it epoxy or fiberglass.

A foam surfboard is very light, which makes it easier to carry around. You can use them for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), or even as a junior board for your children. The main disadvantage of the foam one is that you lose quality when you buy it second-hand since they don’t last very long, especially in tropical climates.

The history of foam surfboards:

People started making foam boards back in the 70s. Some people find them highly inconvenient and not durable at all. That’s the reason why they made those epoxy boards that we see today, along with fiberglass ones as well. Not many companies make these types of boards since it’s really expensive for them to do so.

The best example of famous foam surfboard makers is NSP (New School Productions). They started making boards back in 1976, and since then they haven’t stopped growing their company.

Foam surfboards are very cheap; you can find one starting at 100$. If you want a top-notch model, you can go to around 200-250.

Foam surfboards are perfect if:

A foam surfboard is perfect for people who like hanging out with friends and surfing at the same time. It’s also good for beginners since they’re very light and easy to carry around. They represent a good choice for older people as well since their weight makes them ideal if you’re getting back into surfing after a few years.

Foam surfboards are not perfect if:

The main problem that the majority of people have is durability. You can’t use your foam board in bad waves or extremely close to rocks and reefs without having the risk of slicing it up. They’re not recommended for surfing in tropical climates either, since they don’t last that long even if you wax them regularly.

Advantages of

1- They were very cheap. You can usually find 100$ or even cheaper if you look hard enough online. If you want more quality, then go for models that are around 200$.

2- Lightweight. This feature makes it easy to carry the board around and take it anywhere with you wherever you go.

3- They provide good support. Because they’re very thin, you can feel perfectly safe when using them on the water.

Disadvantages of foam surfboard:

1- Not durable at all. A new foam board will be perfect, but after a while of getting beaten up by waves and rocks, it won’t be of much help.

2- You lose quality when buying second-hand, especially if you want to buy online.

3- Not recommended for tropical climates since foam ones have a tendency of getting ruined fast.

4- They’re not great all the time. Even though they support your weight and feel very sturdy on flat surfaces, it’s not the same when it comes to waves, especially bigger ones. Also, they’re not very flexible and can’t endure bumps against rocks or reefs.

5- Not recommended for people who are learning how to surf since you need a board that’s easier to maneuver around with curves.

6- It’s harder to balance on one of these boards since they’re thinner.

In conclusion:

A foam surfboard is perfect for people who are trying to get back into surfing, or who want a lightweight board for recreation purposes. However, if you’re looking to buy something that will last, then opt for an epoxy or fiberglass one instead since the quality of foam ones degrade easily.
