New Scientists are going on discovering new moons in our solar system. In the solar system, moons are a kind of natural satellites. There are numerous moons, which astronomers have found in our solar system. Even astronomers consider some of the asteroids as moons. Different planets have a different number of satellites according to their orbiting area. Recently scientists discovered 20 new moons in our solar system. After that, Saturn has become the planet having the most number of moons in our solar system. Before Saturn, Jupiter had the highest number of moons. Jupiter had 79 moons. But after the discovery of new moons, Saturn’s total number of moon’s reached 82, making it the planet having the highest number of moon’s in our solar system.
The Saturn is now known as the “moon king” of our solar system. Saturn knocked down Jupiter in owning the highest number of moons after the discovery of new moon’s. On October 7, IAU MPC announced it.
Scott Sheppard is an astronomer working at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC. According to his estimation, Saturn alone has more than the moons. But, they are so small that it is challenging to identify them.
Subaru Telescope captured some images of Saturn from the year 2004 to 2007. From those images, Sheppard and his colleagues found some specks. They were, in fact, the moon’s, which orbited Saturn. After analyzing the location of objects over time, they found that three of the new moon’s were prograde. The direction of their orbital motion and Saturn’s movement were the same. Seventeen of them were retrograde. Their progress was opposite to that of the course of Saturn. Each of them was of a width of 2-5km.
One of the new moon, which astronomers discovered, fall into three existing clusters of moon. According to astronomers, those moon formed after larger natural satellites collided with each other or with any comet. But there was something strange about one prograde moon. The astronomers studied the angle of its axis’s tilt. They found out that it belonged to other similar natural satellites having two-year orbits. According to Sheppard, identifying smaller moon would require bigger telescopes. Also, it will help to identify or categorize the moon according to other similar natural satellites.
There were 20 newfound moon’s of Saturn. Out of them, 17 were retrograde (red). They orbited in the opposite direction of rotation of Saturn. But, rest 3 of them revolved in the same direction of rotation of Saturn. Two of the prograde moon are blue, and they are very close to the planet. However, the rest of one prograde is green in color, and it is very far away from Saturn. The Carnegie Institution for Science is planning to hold a competition for naming the new moon.
Jupiter was the planet having the highest number of moons in our solar system. But after the discovery of new moon, Saturn has acquired the position of Jupiter. Astronomers discovered twenty new moons in Saturn, out of which 17 were retrograde, and three were prograde.
