Surfboard leashes are urethane cords that are attached to a surfboard and worn by surfers around their ankle. The surfboard leashes provide a safety measure to make the surfboard accessible to the surfers in case of a wipeout. They consist of a cuff and a horn that you can attach through a cord. The connecting cord comes in a variety of thicknesses and lengths according to your needs and requirements.

Experts are of the opinion that the length of a surfboard leash should be around the length of your surfboard. Hence, if your surfboard is longer in size, go for a thicker rope. Typically, the cords are available in 3 forms: big wave, regular, and competition. So, if you opt for surfing as a leisurely activity, regular ones will serve your purpose.

Steps To Attach A Surfboard Leash

Step 1: Start by inserting the cord into the leash plug of the surfboard. Tie both its ends together and loop it through the plug. You may also double the cord.
Step-2: Connect the rail saver, and by using Velcro straps, secure it properly. Avoid a long string, or you won’t be able to wrap the rail saver in different positions around the rail.
Step-3: As a regular surfer, you need to wrap the cuff around your right ankle. However, if you are a goofy surfer, you may use the left leg. Do check that the cuff is either too tight or too loose. It has to be firm and comfortable. Furthermore, you have to position the horn in the direction of your surfboard.
Once you follow the steps mentioned above, you are ready to start surfing. Surfboard leashes have their own share of advantages and disadvantages. Some of them are discussed below:

The Good Side

Surfboard leashes save your effort of swimming back to the shore or to your board during moments of a complete wipeout. The leash will also protect your board from breaking down on rocky shorelines or jetties. Breaks are unpredictable. They may be near the shore or sometimes miles away from it.

So, the main purpose of leashes is helping you reach the shore by avoiding long and tiring swims. Surfboard leashes also provide extra safety during surfing. At times, you may have to kick the board if you see a heavy wipeout approaching towards you. Holding on to your board is always a good option, but during heavy falls, it is not safe or recommendable.

The Bad Side

You cannot always rely on surfboard leashes as a device for saving your life. There are times when they break during heavy wipeouts. So, it is still advisable to master the skill of swimming before going surfing. Also, never surf till all your energy is drained. If there is an emergency situation, you must have the stamina to swim for your life. Check the waves before hitting the water. It will give you an idea about the kind of techniques you will require for surfing.
If your leash breaks at any point, do not panic. Just keep yourself calm and try reaching the shore as soon as possible.
