Surfing Types And Techniques

As we already know, surfing is the name of a particular sport. Yet, we haven’t explored the actual meaning of this term. The term surfing, of course, refers to a specific action. It is riding with a board on a water surface in ocean, river or lake. There could be multiple positions when a rider surfs. In olden days, the aboriginals of the Pacific area used to ride on their knees or belly.

Today, we only see the riders to ride in a standing position, which is also termed as stand-up surfing. There are other riding positions too, like bodyboarding. In this position, the rider uses a bodyboard. It is used to ride in multiple positions like on the belly, standing, drop knee and others. Also, there are many more forms like knee boarding, surf matting, and bodyboarding. The last one is quite difficult as the rider depends upon her/his own body to ride without the help of any riding board.

Though there are a lot more variations, the sport can be divided into three types – short boarding, longboarding, and stand-up paddling. The riding style, board design, board length, and wave type may differ in these three types of surfing.
